I’m Back!

Sorry about my recent hiatus. My thesis took over my life! It is finally all done, printed, and handed in and I can get back to the things I love again – like blogging!

There have been some recent changes in my life, the biggest being moving back to Canada from New York City. Though I still love NYC, and I am definitely going to miss the shopping, home is where the heart is!

On one of our last days, I simply had to do something quite silly… I went to Lady M for a delicious breakfast of four slices of cake and a pot of tea (though the bf got a beautiful iced cappuccino that you can see in the background). I definitely recommend anyone visiting the city to do the same! Though maybe just make it two or three… we had a hard time getting through them all!

There is much more to come and you can expect my daily posts again starting today!

Healthy living

I know that I usually post deliciously somewhat bad for you goodies but tonight I felt like being extra healthy. I love making a whole roast chicken. It is so simple and can be done in so many different ways! Tonight I opted to stuff it with 2 halved lemons and cover the outside with oil and poultry seasoning. Then just cover and cook for an hour or more as necessary at 400 degrees and there you go! Super easy and super healthy. For the side I made a yummy summer salad with a sweet vinaigrette, strawberries, red onion, and feta cheese. So good!

A roast chicken is also very economical. I got a couple of rolls for my bf to make sandwiches to take to work and tomorrow I will use the leftovers and the carcass to make soup!

Happy Thursdays!

NYC Day 3

The third and final day of the Almighty Sister’s visit. It was full of more shopping and more food of course. Here are some snapshots!

An awkward photo of our goodies!

Ali made a big purchase… That’s right, a pair of Louboutin’s. Beautiful no? She opted for the wedge so she could comfortably wear them to work all day long. And they’re pretty…

While she also picked up some macarons at Ladurée, I stopped for some cupcakes from Sprinkles Cupcakes. They are the best cupcakes I’ve had in New York so far!

So beautiful…

And then I went all healthy at dinner (once again at The Plaza Food Hall).

I know, my life is thrilling… Jokes. 🙂

NYC Day 2

So today the Almighty Sister and I mostly hung out at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and restaurants. She ventured out early for some shopping but when we caught up we hit the Plaza Food Hall for a several course lunch.

Yaaa… That was huge… But oh so good.

Then on to the MET!

I really like the new galleries for Art of the Arab Lands, Turkey, Iran, Central Asia, and Later South Asia. They are very well done.

Then out for dinner at Balthazar Restaurant for some steak frites 🙂

That pretty much sums up our day! Hopefully more exciting things will happen tomorrow. And sorry for the poor quality images, they’re all from my iPhone 🙂

Have a good night!

The Sisters in Brooklyn

The Almighty Sister and I toured around Brooklyn today. We started at the Brooklyn Flea for a little browsing and then stopped for lunch at The General Green. After a cocktail and some eggs, we headed up to Williamsburg for some shopping and sightseeing. I used both my iPhone and my camera for these so there’s a bit of a mix!

The plants were confused… It’s still February, remember?

I ended up with all of these goodies – 2 Catbird candles, one of their totes that the lovely ladies gave me, and lots of Mast Brothers Chocolate!

I love travel candles. I actually do take them all over the place! You can check out these ones here. Maybe I’ll start a little collection?

The Almighty Sister also ended up walking away with 2 beautiful rings that you can see amongst their gorgeous jewellery collection. I’ll show you more pictures of those tomorrow!

And helloooooo yumminess. I have been kind of obsessed with visiting the Mast Brothers Chocolate storefront for a while so I was so happy to finally get to! I absolutely love their packaging. I highly recommend a visit or you can check out their online store here!

The Almighty Sister and I will wander around tomorrow as well so we’ll see what we come home with. Wish us luck!

Happy Valentine’s!

I know, most generic title ever! But what can I say, I’m a bit of a suck for a holiday all about love. Even before I had someone special in my life, it was always a day to tell your family and friends how much you love them. It’s like a little reminder that it needs to be said as much as possible.

Today my bf and I went to Serendipity 3 for a very “healthy” lunch. Yum.

This is the ridiculous sunday we finished our meal with. We ended up bringing the rest of the giant chocolate cake piece that was in there home with us for later.

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone!! I hope that the Almighty Sister is not too busy with love to share her weekly travel stories with us tonight!

That’s all I need to say. Pretzels. After seeing this recipe on the blog A Beautiful Mess, I knew I needed to attempt it myself! It was extremely easy and they turned out deliciously 🙂

The yeast decided to go for a swim.

Note to self: wear apron next time…

Another note to self: NYC apartments offer very little counter space to properly role out dough for pretzels…

Thus resulting in very large bun-like things.

But they turned out pretty yummy in the end!

Some have sea salt…

Others have cinnamon sugar…

I must say though that the cinnamon sugar ones are my favourite!

Soft Pretzels

Makes 8-12

  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1 1/8 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup bread flour
  • 3 cups (all-purpose) flour
  • 3-4 tablespoon melted butter
  • course sea salt
  • cinnamon and sugar
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda.

Dissolve the yeast in the 1 1/2 cups warm water. Stir in the sugar and salt. In a kitchen aid mixer (or a large bowl, working by hand) combine the bread flour, all-purpose flour, and yeast solution. Mix/knead until dough is elastic-like (4-6 minutes). Set dough in a greased bowl, cover and allow to rise for 1 hour. Once dough has risen cut it into 8-12 pieces and roll out into a  long rope. Twist into a pretzel shape. Dip in a shallow bowl containing the 1 cup warm water and 1 tablespoon baking soda. Place an a baking sheet (that’s been covered with parchment paper), cover and allow to rise for another 45 minutes to an hour. Brush on the melted butter. Top with either course salt or cinnamon sugar. And bake at 375 F for 10-12 minutes.
